Naar aanleiding van de colleges van filosoof Jan Flameling ontstond deze serie. Een onderzoek naar de betekenis van het begrip “Er zijn”, naar de zijnsvraag.
Twee jaar lang zijn de dagelijkse momenten gefotografeerd die het precieze moment weergeven van het besef “er te zijn”. Kortom een beeldende vertaling van het filosofische begrip ‘da sein’ zoals Martin Heidegger dat gemunt heeft. Uit de uiteindelijke serie van ruim 600 beelden zijn voor het boek en de begeleidende expositie 30 beelden geselecteerd.
Jan Flameling heeft het nawoord bij deze uitgave geschreven.

In response to the colleges of philosopher Jan Flameling, I started this series.
An investigation into the meaning of the concept "Being there".
For two years, the daily moments have been photographed that represent the exact moment displaying the awareness of "being there".
In short, a visual translation of the philosophical concept 'da sein' from Martin
Heidegger. Out of the final series of over 600 images, 30 images have been selected for the book and the accompanying exhibition. Jan Flameling has written the afterword of this edition.

ER ZIJN

Als je er bent,
kun je niet zeggen dat je er niet bent.
Als je er niet bent,
kun je niet zeggen dat je er bent.

Een waarheid als een koe, zullen sommigen zeggen. Kom je in de kroeg of op een feestje iemand tegen die zegt dat hij er niet is, geven we hem om het af te leren geen pilsje meer. Zelfs de klassieke scepticus die het bestaan van de op hem afstormende ossenkar betwijfelde, twijfelde niet aan zijn eigen bestaan.

Ook René Descartes stelt - in zijn, in de omgeving van Leiden in het Latijn geschreven en in 1641 verschenen Meditaties - vast dat hij er niet aan kan twijfelen dat hij er is. Hij formuleert deze, volgens hem helder en welonderscheiden voorstelling echter als volgt: ‘Ego sum, ego existo’ ofwel: ‘Ik ben, ik besta’.
Je zou ook kunnen zeggen:
Het levend wezen, wiens bestaan wordt gekenmerkt door      het vermogen te denken, wordt gewaar dat zijn bestaan onlosmakelijk verbonden is met het besef dat het leeft.
Descartes’ tweede helder en welonderscheiden voorstelling is dat het ‘ik’ (ego) een wezen is dat kan denken (res cogitans). In de 20^ste eeuw hebben neurologen als Antonio Damasio opgemerkt dat Descartes zich vergist. Wij zijn namelijk helemaal geen ‘denkend ding’ maar een lichaam dat kan denken én voelen.
Juist het zijnsbesef van Descartes is een ‘voelend weten’ wat er gaande is en gevraagd is om de kansen op overleven (in welbevinden) te vergroten. Ofwel: het levend wezen voelt - op basis van hersen-  en zenuwstelselcapaciteit - dat het ‘er’ is.

Hebben de neurologen velen ervan overtuigd dat de tweede helder en welonderscheiden voorstelling van Descartes niet kan kloppen, is het de 20^ste eeuwse Duitse filosoof Martin Heidegger die vraagtekens plaatst bij de eerste onbetwijfelbare gedachte van Descartes: ‘Ik ben, ik besta’. Om precies te zijn: bij de verwoording van het zijnsbesef. Het is niet het concept ‘geest’ dat Heidegger hoofdpijn bezorgt maar het concept ‘ik’ (ego).
Heidegger wijst erop dat in de Oudheid het zelf (door filosofen) niet werd opgevat als ‘ik’ maar als ‘een levend wezen dat in (een) gemeenschap met anderen leeft’ (zoon politikon). Heidegger stelt dan ook voor het levend wezen dat beseft dat het ‘er’ is, niet ‘ik’ te noemen maar ‘erzijn’ (Dasein) en te onderzoeken wat ‘er’ en wat ‘zijn’ betekent.
In zijn, in het Zwarte Woud in eigenzinnig Duits geschreven en in 1927 verschenen boek Zijn en tijd stelt hij zichzelf en ons de lezers, die het  besef hebben dat zij ‘er’ zijn, onder meer de volgende vragen:

Zou je ‘er’ niet kunnen opvatten als ‘in de wereld’? Zou je ‘in de wereld’ niet kunnen opvatten als ‘in betrekkingen met’ en als ‘mede’? Zijn wij niet altijd in verbindingen en door verbindingen?
[Of, zoals de hedendaagse boeddhistische meester Thich Nhat Hanh schrijft: Betekent ‘zijn’ niet inter-zijn[1]?]

Zou het zijnsbesef: erzijn betekent in betrekkingen zijn niet om een bepaalde zijnshouding vragen? Als jij jezelf opvat als in betrekkingen, zou dat niet van zelf betekenen dat je je betrokken voelt? Hoor je je niet verantwoordelijk te voelen en tonen voor de vormgeving van je bestaan? Is engagement niet vanzelfsprekend?

Zou je ook het ‘in‘ niet anders moeten opvatten dan in de uitdrukking ‘water in een glas’? Jij bent – anders dan water – in staat te beseffen wat ‘er’ en ‘in’ betekent. Betekent ‘in’ niet dat ‘er’ altijd vanuit een bepaalde gemoedstoestand met behulp van bepaalde begrippen door ons geduid wordt, van betekenis én zin wordt voorzien?

Zou je ‘zijn’ (van erzijn) niet kunnen opvatten als worden, als in wording zijn? Zou in het heden het verleden er nog en de toekomst er al zijn? Zou (er)zijn niet kunnen betekenen: altijd al vooruit zijn bij...? Zou het menselijk bestaan niet ook gebeurtenis- en geboorte-karakter (kunnen) hebben?

‘Sorry, Jan. Ik kan het niet meer volgen’.

OK. Laat ik het proberen uit te leggen door het te illustreren:Je zit in de kroeg aan de kade, met een glaasje wijn en wat nootjes op tafel, de krant te lezen. Er komt een jongeman binnen, die een biertje bestelt en ook aan een tafeltje aan het raam gaat zitten. Je ziet hem regelmatig op zijn horloge kijken, alsof hij een afspraak heeft, op iemand wacht. Soms kijkt hij naar buiten – verwachtingsvol, soms in de spiegel, die aan de muur hangt, om te kijken of zijn haar goed zit. Hoewel hij in zijn eentje daar zit, is de andere, die er nog niet is, er al – afwezig-aanwezig, zou je kunnen zeggen.

Een uur later staat de jongeman aan de bar – zijn ‘date’ is niet op komen dagen – en bestelt, licht aangeschoten, zijn zesde biertje. Diegene die niet is gekomen, is er toch – aanwezig-afwezig, zou je kunnen zeggen. Zelfs als de jongeman (tevergeefs) een ander probeert te versieren.

Je bent altijd in betrekkingen, altijd vanuit een bepaalde mate aan betrokkenheid. Met diegene die zal komen, met diegene die niet is gekomen, met diegene die misschien (niet) komt, met diegene die (op een dag) komt.
Let wel, dit is geen filosofie. Het is gewoon zo. Je hoeft alleen maar om je heen te kijken.

Je ziet dan hoe wat er geweest is, er nog is, hoe wat er zal wezen, er al is, hoe wat er is, ‘weest’ ofwel in wording is.
Kijk maar!

BEING THERE[1]

If you are there,
You can’t say you are not there
If you aren’t there,
You can’t say you are there

A truism, some would say. If you meet someone in a bar or at a party who says he isn’t there, you don’t give him another beer to teach him a lesson. Even the sceptic who doubted the existence of the oxcart rushing at him, did not doubt his own existence.

René Descartes – in his Meditations which were written (in Latin) in the neighbourhood of Leiden and published in 1641 – also ascertains (like Augustine before him) that man is not able to doubt that he is there (if he is there). Descartes formulates this first clear and distinct perception, however, as follows: ‘Ego sum, ego existo’ or: ‘I am, I exist’.
Descartes’ second clear and distinct perception is that the “I’ (ego) is a being which is able to think (res cogitans).
In other words:
Man as the living being whose existence is characterized by the
capability to think, is, if alive, aware that he’s alive.
In the 20th century neurologists like Antonio Damasio have shown that Descartes was partly mistaken. Man is not a ‘thinking thing’ but a body that can feel and think.
It is precisely Descartes’ awareness of being alive which is a feeling of what happens around and in him and of what is required of him to enhance his chances of staying alive (and well-being).
In other words:
Man as the living being we are: a body with a certain brain-
and nervous system-capacity, feels that (s)he is ‘(t)here’.

Many of us have been persuaded by neurologists that Descartes’ second clear and distinct perception cannot be right. The 20th century German philosopher Martin Heidegger, however, questions Descartes’ first indubitable thought: ‘I am, I exist’. To be precise: Descartes’ formulation of the awareness of being. It is not the concept ‘mind’ that causes Heidegger to have a headache but the concept ‘I’ (ego).

Heidegger points out that in antiquity the self was not conceived (by philosophers) as ‘I‘ but as ‘a living being which lives together / in a community with others’ (zoon politikon). Heidegger proposes to no longer call the living being which is aware that it is there ‘I’ but ‘being there’ (Dasein) and to inquire into the meaning of ‘there’ and ‘being’.
In his book Being and time – which was written (in idiosyncratic German) in the Black Forest and published in 1927 – he asks himself and us the readers, who are aware they are ‘there’, the following questions:

Could we not conceive ‘there’ as ‘in the world’? Could we not understand  ‘being in the world’ as ‘being in relations’ or ‘being with’? Are we not always in and by means of connections with the air, the water and the trees and with others like us?
[Or, as the contemporary buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh writes: “To be is to inter-be”.[2]]

Would the awareness of being: being there means being in relations not demand a certain attitude to being, a certain way of being there? If you understand yourself as being connected, would that not imply that you feel concerned? Should you not feel and show yourself responsible for the design (Entwurf) of your existence? Does being there not mean being committed?

Should we not understand our ‘being in the world’ as different from ‘water being in a glass’? Are you not – different from water – capable of understanding what ‘there’ and ‘in’ mean? Does ‘being in’ not mean that we always interpret ‘being there’ being in a certain mood or emotional state and using certain concepts?

Should we not conceive the ‘being’ (of ‘being there’) as becoming? Is (most of the time) in the present the past not still there and the future already there? Does ‘being (there)’ not usually mean being always already ahead with…? But could ‘being (there)’ not also mean being born, be-coming, (the coming of) an event?

OK. Let me try to explain what Heidegger says by illustrating it:Say, you’re in a bar, with a glass of red wine and some cheese, reading the paper. A young man enters the bar, orders a beer and also sits down at a table near the window. You see him regularly having a look at his watch, as if he has a date, is waiting for someone. Sometimes he looks out of the window – expectantly, sometimes in the mirror hanging on the wall, to see if his hair is still the way it should be. Although he sits there on his own, the other who is not yet there, is already there – absent but present, you could say. An hour later, the young man is at the bar – his ‘date’ has not come – and orders, slightly tipsy, his sixth beer. The one who hasn’t come, is nonetheless there – present but absent, you could say. Even (or especially) if the young man tries (in vain) to come on to somebody else.

You are always in relations, always in a certain way committed. With the one who will come, with the one who has not come, with the one who might (not) come, with the one who (one day) comes.
Mind you, this is not philosophy. It is just the way it is. You just have to look around you.

You can then see how what has been there, still is there, how what will be there, already is there, how what is there, be-comes.
